In cricket, we often hear commentators talk about a team having "all the momentum" or "wresting back control." But what does momentum actually look like, and how can we measure it? At CricRover, we created the Momentum Map to turn this abstract feeling into concrete, visual intelligence.
The Limitation of the Scorecard
Traditional scorecards are static. They tell you the final runs, wickets, and overs, but they completely hide the story of how those runs were accumulated. A score of 160/6 in a T20 match could be the result of a steady, linear accumulation, or a chaotic sequence of explosive powerplay hitting, a middle-overs collapse, and a late-innings rescue act. The tactical lessons of these two scenarios are completely different.
How the Momentum Map Works
The CricRover Momentum Map is an over-by-over visual timeline that tracks batting dominance versus bowling control. By analyzing every single ball of an over, we calculate a net momentum score:
- Bright Green Bars: High-scoring overs (typically 12+ runs) where the batting team is actively dictating terms.
- Dark Grey/Muted Bars: Tight, disciplined overs (0-4 runs) where bowlers choke the run rate and build dot-ball pressure.
- Crimson/Red Bars: Wicket-taking overs. Wickets represent the ultimate momentum shift, instantly resetting batting rhythm and raising the Required Run Rate.
Case Study: The Inflection Point
Consider a typical T20 run chase. Team B needs 80 runs off the last 10 overs — a manageable 8.00 runs per over. However, look at the Momentum Map. If the 11th and 12th overs are dark grey (3 and 4 runs respectively), the pressure climbs. The Required Run Rate jumps to 9.12. This pressure forces a batsman into a risky shot in the 13th over, resulting in a crimson bar. Suddenly, the match has shifted entirely without a massive spike in runs.

Applying Momentum Maps to Your Analysis
By reviewing Momentum Maps after matches, coaches and analysts can identify exactly where a chase succeeded or failed. Did a team lose because they failed to exploit the powerplay (missing green bars)? Or did they collapse in the middle overs against spin? The visual representation makes these patterns immediately obvious, paving the way for better strategic planning in future matches.
